Amy, thanks so much for hosting me on your blog today. I love visiting other people’s houses :-).

AM: Rumor has it that you've just recently released the first book in The Granny Series. What can you tell us about this book?

KB: Rumor is right! Nancy Naigle and I just released In For a Penny, book one in The Granny Series, on November 5. It’s a cozy Southern suspense starring four “mature” protagonists. These gals are just like Dirty Harry…only over 50, female, and from the South.

In For a Penny is about Lillian Summer Fairview—a real Southern lady—who goes up the river for Social Security fraud and her friends who track down and “punish” the double-crossing funeral director who set her up.

In For a Penny blurb:

Honey, these are not your momma’s grannies…
When Lillian Summer Fairview’s husband up and dies on her, it leaves the last living member of the most prestigious family in Summer Shoals, Georgia, in a hot mess. While Lil was busy being a proper Southern lady, Harlan squandered dang near the whole family fortune on lottery tickets. To keep her financial skeletons in the closet and give him a decent burial, Lil made a deal that has now landed her in prison.
Desperate to keep her troubles a secret and the family estate from falling down while she pays her debt to society, Lil entrusts Summer Haven’s care to her best friend, Maggie, who recruits two more over-fifty ladies to live at Summer Haven and help keep it afloat.

But when Maggie discovers that Lil’s restitution is ten times the amount she “borrowed” from the federal government, she’s convinced Lil has taken the fall for someone else’s crime. And these gals will use every trick in their little-old-lady bags to prove it.

What has been your favorite writing project to date and why?

Oh, they’re all my favorite when I start them. And they’re all my least favorite when I’m revising and doing content edits :-). Seriously, In For a Penny has been extra-special fun because Nancy and I are co-writing the series. Believe me, one of us always has an idea or solution to a plot problem. I love having another writer in my corner because sometimes I get lost in my own logic - LOL.

I also enjoy writing my single titles like my sexy, contemporary romance, Personal Assets. I love the banter between the hero and heroine. I’ve also been told I write a hot love scene. One woman told me I should warn people never to read my love scenes while they’re riding public transportation. I still have no idea what that means, but I took it as a compliment.

When you get stuck, what inspires you to keep moving?

A deadline and my editor - LOL.

Sometimes I call one of my critique partners and whine until she helps me work out the problem. Other times, I take a break and come back to the story later. I also write in 20 minute sprints, and there’s nothing I can’t stand to do for 20 minutes. So such a short stint keeps the fear and the problem from overwhelming me.

I read and enjoyed your book, Personal Assets, the first book in your Texas Nights series. When can readers expect to pick up the next sassy book in the series?

Thanks so much for the compliment, Amy! Carina Press will release Running the Red Light—the second sexy, contemporary romance in the Texas Nights series—on January 6, 2014. Books three and four will also release in 2014—tentatively scheduled for July and November. Readers can find an excerpt from Red Light here: http://www.kelseybrowning.com/books-2/running-the-red-light/in-the-red-excerpt/

Blurb for Running the Red Light:

After wearing a “Least Likely to Succeed” label all her life, Roxanne Eberly is hell-bent on making her Red Light Lingerie store successful. Although the residents of small-town Shelbyville, Texas, are a little…lingerie-resistant, she’ll win them over eventually. So when a former employer sues her, putting a major wrinkle in her careful plans, she reluctantly accepts help from hot-stuff Houston attorney Jamie Wright.

Jamie’s on track to become his firm’s youngest partner, but discovers an unwritten prerequisite—marriage. Turns out, the only woman he wants is Roxanne, but a woman peddling panties and prophylactics isn’t a suitable spouse for an up-and-coming attorney.

Jamie’s tangled up in Roxanne’s lawsuit, her life and her lingerie. But if they’re ever going to make it work, Roxanne’s big-city boy will have to decide what he values more: the career he always thought he wanted or the woman he never thought he’d fall for.

Any publishing advice for aspiring writers out there?

Make some good friends. Because if you’re going to survive in the writing business, you’ll need them. I wouldn’t still be writing today if it weren’t for my writer pal gals—women like Adrienne Giordano, Tracey Devlyn, Theresa Stevens, Nancy Naigle and Jamie Farrell. These are the ladies who’ve picked me up off the self-pity street and tossed me on the keep-writing wagon more than a few times.

Amy, a question for your readers: how do they discover new authors?

  2. Nice interview ladies! How do I discover new authors? Almost always from social media or blogs. I don't pay too much attention to Facebook ads in my feed but when one friend or author recommends another, I take notice. I also like to see authors featuring other authors on their blogs. I do follow a few non-author blogs like Kindles & Wine and learn about new authors there. Congrats on IN FOR A PENNY!

    1. Amy - thanks for the info on how you find new authors! I'm assuming you listen to friends or authors you know because you trust their judgment and know they have similar taste?

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

    2. Yes. For example, it was Adrienne that told me if I liked her books I might like Misty's and she was right. I have tried many other authors based on you having them on your blog, too.

  3. Awesome interview ladies! I can't wait for the second book in your Texas Night series, Kelsey.

How I find new authors is by recommendation by authors, bloggers, and from reviews! And since many blogger/reviewers are my friends, I get recommendations from friends too. LOL I also check out Goodreads and Amazon for their picks. But mostly it's from blogging around and landing on an up-coming author's page accidentally and from publishing house emails.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Honestly, it was just so different when I left the States to move overseas in 2006. At that point, it was still primarily a brick & mortar business. I bought most of what I read at Barnes & Noble, Half Price Books or another book discounter in town. It wasn't until I was out of the US that I went to e-books (actually an early adopter reading on a tiny iPaq - LOL).

The point to all this is I found new authors by wandering book store aisles, rarely by blogs, reviews or others' recommendations. So I'm intensely curious how this works for a reader these days. Because I'm immersed in the book world, I have more new authors introduced to me than I can possibly keep up with.

Thanks so much for swinging by!

  6. I really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me. Then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again.
